While doing a quick search online on modesty I came across this quote,
"Modesty is not a way of dressing it is a way of life, a matter of the heart."
Modesty was an issue we had to address with Daddy's girl this week. For the most part she has great taste & dresses appropriately; however, she is influenced on occasion by others outside our home. A Halloween costume was the issue. I wish I could post pictures so you had an idea of how "hochie" (as Big Daddy put it) this costume was, but I don't care to have her displayed in that manner for the world to see. However, I did find it online, here is a picture from the website: (Please note that the costume was even more revealing on Taylor's skinny little 10 year old body than what is revealed in this advertisement)

The general rule of thumb with apparel is "Would you wear it if you were with Jesus?"
When Taylor came home with this "sexy" costume Big Daddy expressed his authority immediately. I asked her if this was something she would wear in front of Jesus & she said no. She also said she wouldn't feel comfortable wearing it around boys her age or a woman at church that she has great respect for. Then why?
The worldly standards & popular trends all seem so appealing & "not so bad" -- they have become the norm for many. It is our responsibility to encourage our children to set GODLY standards for themselves - not worldly standards. Well, "God made your tummy. What's wrong with showing it?" . . .
Well, I'm going to have to answer a question with a question from Vicki Courtney's book, Your Girl, "Can there be purity without modesty?" God made a woman's body with all intentions of purity in mind - NOT for the body to be displayed in a "sexy" manner especially in public & even more so at the age of 10 years old. Let me point out that there is a HUGE difference between a 10 year old being "sexy" & a grown woman being sexy in the privacy of her home with her husband. Look at 1 Timothy 2:9 "I also want women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety . . ." There you have it!
We came to an agreement with Taylor. She can wear the costume with a black leotard underneath; however, for future purchases there will be no compromise. I am very proud of Taylor for facing the struggle of not conforming to what the world and others view as okay & searching her heart & realizing it just wasn't for her. As easy as it is to say it is not always as easy to do. I thank God for giving her a Daddy that cared enough to say NO & have her stand for what she believes in.

Good for you! And for her. When I looked at the earlier post, which showed the kids in the costumes, I actually thought to myself, "I'm glad to see that this costume was modest!" I've seen the original version (or others that are similar) enough to realize that you had done something to make this one modest.
Then I continued further down the blog and saw your post on modesty and the costume in question. More parents of girls need to take this stance. Keep it up, Tiff!!
